Overview
ResQ, a product by Miles 2 Go, is Bermuda's on-demand emergency assistance platform connecting drivers, boaters, and residents with prompt, reliable towing, mechanical assistance, marine support, and water delivery services in just a few taps. Built around two core values, reliability and convenience, ResQ aims to become Bermuda's most trusted app for both users and service providers.
The platform gives vendors an easy way to list and manage their offerings and products while providing users with a seamless, instant connection to the help they need. Whether you travel a little or a lot, troubles do not come with a warning. ResQ was built to ensure that when they do arrive, help is always just one tap away.
Background
Bermuda's small but active population of drivers, boaters, and residents has long lacked a modern, centralized platform for accessing emergency roadside and marine assistance. Service providers operated through word-of-mouth, phone calls, and manual dispatch, leading to slow response times, poor visibility of available help, and a frustrating experience for users in distress.
Randy Spence and Akila Wilson identified this gap and founded Miles 2 Go with the vision of building ResQ, a technology-first emergency assistance platform purpose-built for Bermuda's unique automotive, marine, and utilities landscape. The platform serves B2C users across the island, covering roadside emergencies, marine breakdowns, and water delivery needs within a single, unified mobile experience.
Project Objectives
The collaboration with Miles 2 Go aimed to:
- Build a cross-platform Flutter mobile app for iOS and Android enabling users to request roadside, marine, and water delivery assistance within seconds.
- Develop a vendor-facing interface allowing service providers to list, manage, and respond to service requests efficiently from within the app.
- Implement GPS-based location sharing and real-time tracking so users can share their position and monitor incoming assistance live on the map.
- Integrate secure payment processing and transparent service status updates to build user trust and ensure smooth transaction handling.
- Design an emergency-optimized interface that prioritizes clarity, speed, and simplicity for users in high-stress roadside and marine situations.
- Build a scalable Node.js Express backend with MongoDB Atlas to support reliable, high-performance service delivery across the island.
Challenges
Developing ResQ required solving a unique set of design and technical challenges specific to emergency service delivery:
- Emergency-First Interface Design: Creating an interface that allowed users to request help quickly and effortlessly in emergencies where clarity and immediacy are critical, with no room for confusion or delays.
- Real-Time Location and Tracking: Ensuring users could easily share their location, view nearby service providers, and track incoming assistance in real time required a precise, low-latency GPS integration and live update system.
- Multi-Service Integration: Integrating multiple complex service types, namely towing, mechanical assistance, marine rescue, and water delivery, into a single streamlined interface without overwhelming users was a significant design challenge.
- Secure Payment Integration: Incorporating secure payment processing within an emergency-use app while maintaining a fast and simple user flow required careful UX consideration and backend architecture planning.
- Building User Trust: The design needed to establish immediate trust through visual clarity, responsive interactions, and transparent communication of service status, particularly for users in distressing emergency situations.
